There is a vast range of books on Egypt on the market at present, and it is often hard to make a choice between them; most have a decent text, and one can hardly avoid beautiful illustrations on such a subject. However if you are particularly interested in the pyramids, this may be the book for you. It claims comprehensiveness in being the first fully illustrated survey of all Egypt's pyramids, the text is well-written and based on up-to-date research, and the author is an expert in this field. There is information on many aspects of the pyramids; the legends surrounding them, the activities of archaeologists, the towns which grew around them, the priests and servants who had responsibility for them, and most of all the construction and craftsmanship of the structures themselves. The text is accompanied by many useful explanatory and reconstructive illustrations.

    • Pierre Tallet's discovery of the Red Sea Scrolls in 2013 marked a pivotal moment in Egyptology, revealing the world's oldest surviving written documents. These papyri, dating back 4,600 years, alongside Mark Lehner's research, reshape our understanding of the Great Pyramid's construction at Giza. Tallet and Lehner present a definitive account of this extraordinary find, beginning with Tallet's quest for hieroglyphic inscriptions in the Sinai Peninsula, culminating in the discovery of the diary of Inspector Merer at Wadi el-Jarf, an ancient harbor on the Red Sea. This translation unveils the precise methods used to transport the stones to Giza for the Great Pyramid. Coupled with Lehner's excavations of the recently discovered harbor, the Red Sea Papyri significantly enhance our comprehension of how ancient Egyptians constructed enduring monuments. The authors narrate this thrilling discovery and examine how pyramid construction contributed to the unification of the state, advancing Egyptian civilization. Lavishly illustrated, the book captures the excitement and importance of these findings, emphasizing the remarkable nature of uncovering a contemporary eyewitness account of the creation of the only remaining Wonder of the Ancient World.
