Das Standardwerk zur slawischen Mythologie Wenn man von europäischer Mythologie spricht, denkt man meist an die griechisch-römische, seltener an die germanisch-keltische und am wenigsten an die Mythologie der alten Slawen. Wenig ist überliefert, und irrtümlicherweise glauben wir, es handle sich um ein osteuropäisches Kulturerbe, das uns in Deutschland nichts anginge. Erstaunlich viele Relikte dieser untergegangenen Welt haben sich jedoch in der mittelalterlichen Literatur erhalten, vor allem in den Berichten christlicher Missionare, sowie in Volksbrauch und Volksglauben. Zdenek Vana faßt alles zusammen, was aus dem gesamten slawischen Raum überliefert ist und deutet es auf fundierte Weise. Sein Hintergrund ist wissenschaftlich-ethnologisch, aber er bleibt nicht auf einer rein akademischen Stufe stehen, sondern läßt auch (freilich auf behutsame Weise) anthroposophische Interpretationen einfließen, die er als solche kenntlich macht. Auch wenn man diesen anthroposophischen Standpunkt nicht teilt, erfährt man außerordentlich viel über die osteuropäische Kultur- und Religionsgeschichte - und auch über die eigene untergegangene kulturelle Identität, denn ein Großteil des späteren Deutschland war im Mittelalter von slawischen Stämmen bewohnt, die z.T. noch bis ins 13. Jahrhundert ihrer heidnischen Religion anhingen - erst 1168 wurde die Tempelburg von Arkona auf Rügen von den Dänen erobert.
