Focusing on Gustav Klimt's famous mural, this book reveals the story behind the Beethoven Frieze and the role it played in Vienna's cultural heyday. Created by Klimt for the XIV Exhibition of the Secession in 1902--also known as the Beethoven Exhibition--the Beethoven Frieze remains one of the most important examples of Vienna Art Nouveau, and one of the highlights of Klimt's career. Based on Richard Wagner's interpretation of Beethoven's ninth symphony, it displays Klimt's artistic opinions, passions and impressions. As a vehicle through which Klimt struggled to express the spiritual in terms of the visual, its elaborate decoration and frank eroticism reflect the debate between tradition and modernism that was raging in fin de siècle Vienna. In this book, more than 200 images in color and duotone offer close-up details of the frieze's panels and give an overall perspective of the grandiose work. Stephan Koja discusses the Beethoven exhibition as a collective work of art, while other essays describe the techniques Klimt used to create the frieze and those employed to preserve it, its place in Klimt's oeuvre, and its importance as a symbol of Vienna's artistic community.

The Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window by Johannes Vermeer is one of the most famous works of seventeenth-century Dutch art. Preserved at the Gemaldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden, the painting has been restored, in an elaborate process lasting from 2017 to 2021. The removal of a large section of overpainting dating from a later period has profoundly altered the work's appearance and revealed the original composition. To showcase the discovery, the Dresden Gemaldegalerie is now presenting the Girl Reading a Letter along with other masterpieces by Vermeer and a selection of exceptional Dutch genre paintings that reveal parallels and reciprocities between the art of Vermeer and that of his peers. This catalog brings together texts by renowned scholars as they explore not only the restoration of this pivotal work but also fundamental questions on the visual vernacular and essence of Vermeer's painting, his optical realism, his iconography of love, and the lived realities of women in the Dutch Golden Age.

Bernardo Bellotto (1722-1780) is one of the most famous vedute painters of the 18th century. His views and prospects of town and country are so rich in detail, so precisely and meticulously painted that historic places come to life again before the viewer's eyes. But far from being simply faithful reproductions of sights, his vedute are rather carefully planned compositions, the result of the artist availing himself of all the technical know-how of his age. During his time in Dresden, Bellotto created some of his most important works, which now form part of the collection at the Gemaldegalerie Alte Meister. These vedute still influence the way Dresden is perceived today, at home and abroad. They present a wonderful panorama of the old Augustan city, on which two of the greatest art collectors in German history - Augustus the Strong and his son Augustus III - left their mark. Thanks to these two electors, who simultaneously held the crown of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Dresden art collections flourished, becoming some of the most important in the world. This volume traces the various stages of Bellotto's career, focussing in detail on the canvases of his Dresden period. It also examines the history of the world-famous picture gallery, the Gemaldegalerie Alte Meister, and the era of Baroque collection-building in Dresden.

Designed by Gottfried Semper, the gallery building at the Dresden Zwinger houses not only the Gemaldegalerie Alte Meister (Old Masters Picture Gallery), but also the Skulpturensammlung bis 1800 (Sculpture Collection from Antiquity to 1800), which is renowned for the high quality and impeccable provenance of its holdings. In addition to outstanding ancient works, around 100 Renaissance and Baroque sculptures are now on permanent display at the Semperbau. The concept for the gallery was revised following a thorough investigation of the collection, which also brought to light some hidden treasures. This catalogue presents the first results of the scholarly research; featuring selected masterpieces by Filarete, Giambologna, Adriaen de Vries, Giovanni Francesco Susini, Corneille Van Cleve, Guillaume Coustou, Paul Heermann and Balthasar Permoser, among others, it illustrates the impressive breadth and variety of the Dresden Skulpturensammlung.

Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Pope Alexander VII (born Fabio Chigi) changed the face of baroque Rome forever. From the early years of their amicable relationship comes an intimate work of art, long considered lost but now rediscovered in the Skulpturensammlung in Dresden: a shockingly realistic human skull of white marble, made by Bernini for Alexander VII in 1655. This book explores this major discovery, placing it within its broader historical context and providing new insights into the Chigi family's art collection, the acquisition of part of this collection by Augustus the Strong, the influence of Bernini on the Dresden-based sculptor Balthasar Permoser, and much more. This exhibition sees the Gemaldegalerie Alte Meister turn its attention to women artists long overshadowed by the male Old Masters of the 16th to 18th century. Proportionally, they are in the minority and unlike their male colleagues they remain far from household names. Very few talented women had the good fortune to grow up in a working artistic environment, where institutional and social barriers could be sidestepped or at least partly overcome. This catalogue presents women painters and printmakers of the modern era, with exhibits selected from the collections of the Gemaldegalerie Alte Meister and Kupferstich-Kabinett. The five essays explore the work of these extraordinary artists, including Marietta Robusti, Lavinia Fontana, Diana Scultori, and Angelica Kauffman.

The appeal of these artefacts lies, among other things, in their great antiquity and good state of preservation, in their vibrant colours, the formal clarity and distinctiveness of their iconography, as well as the monumental impact of even the smallest objects. Egyptian works have been collected in Dresden ever since the early eighteenth century, when the foundations were laid for what is now a remarkable collection including, for example, the Dresden Book of the Dead papyrus, the famous mummies from Saqqara, and the remarkable temple reliefs with representations of the Sed Festival. This book explores the history of the collection and of Egyptomania in Saxony during the Baroque Period, as well as elucidating the Ancient Egyptian pantheon and the concept of the afterlife as reflected in the Dresden Egyptian collection. Raffael schuf ab 1515 im Auftrag von Papst Leo X. zehn grossformatige Kartons, nach denen Tapisserien fur die Sixtinische Kapelle gewebt wurden. Sie zeigen Szenen aus dem Leben der beiden Hauptapostel Petrus und Paulus. Raffaels Kartons wurden im 17. Jahrhundert in der englischen Tapisserie-Manufaktur in Mortlake als Vorlage fur weitere Serien verwendet. Dort entstand auch die Folge mit sechs Bildteppichen, die spater in den Besitz von August dem Starken kam. Der Band, erschienen anlasslich der von der Gemaldegalerie Alte Meister prasentierten Sonderausstellung zum 500. Dieser Band vereint in opulenten Abbildungen Glanzstücke beider Sammlungen und macht die wechselseitige fruchtbare Beeinflussung beider Gattungen anschaulich.

Der aus dem Erzgebirge stammende Paul Heermann (1673-1732) war einer der bedeutendsten Barockbildhauer Deutschlands. Vollig zu Unrecht steht er jedoch bis heute im Schatten des wesentlich bekannteren Balthasar Permoser. Dieses Bild mochte die erste dem Kunstler jemals gewidmete Ausstellung nun zurechtrucken. Anlass dafur ist ein spektakularer Ankauf, der der Skulpturensammlung rechtzeitig zum 350. Geburtstag Heermanns gelungen die 1,40 Meter grosse Marmorgruppe Saturn und Ops , deren raffinierte Komposition, virtuose Technik und sinnliche Oberflachengestaltung das grosse Konnen des Meisters vor Augen fuhrt. Die Skulptur zeigt die innige Zuneigung eines Ehepaares, der romischen Gotter Saturn und Ops, die als Regenten des glucklichen und fruchtbaren Goldenen Zeitalters galten. Da sich August der Starke gern als Saturn, der ein neues Goldenes Zeitalter fur Sachsen begrundet, feiern liess, kann die Gruppe auch als Sinnbild der glanzvollen augusteischen Epoche gesehen werden. Der vorliegende Band ladt somit zur Entdeckung neuer Facetten der reichen Kunstgeschichte Sachsens ein. Er beinhaltet eine umfassende Darstellung von Paul Heermanns Leben und Werk unter besonderer Berucksichtigung seiner grosstenteils verlorenen Werke fur den Zwinger und den Grossen Garten sowie einen Katalog seiner Werke in der Skulpturensammlung.

Die Retrospektive feiert den venezianischen Künstler Bernardo Bellotto (1722–1780) anlässlich seines 300. Geburtstags. Bellotto, ein bedeutender Maler von Stadtansichten im 18. Jahrhundert, bietet durch seine Werke einzigartige Einblicke in die Architektur und das Alltagsleben der Barockzeit. Mit rund 140 Exponaten eröffnet die Schau in der Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister einen umfassenden Blick auf Bellottos Leben und künstlerisches Schaffen. Nach seinen Anfängen in Venedig lebte er ab 1747 in Dresden und malte für den sächsischen Kurfürsten Friedrich August III. sowie dessen Premierminister Heinrich Graf von Brühl großformatige Veduten. Nach Aufenthalten in Wien und München kehrte Bellotto 1766 nach Warschau zurück. Die Ausstellung präsentiert neben selten gezeigten Gemälden auch zahlreiche Zeichnungen sowie elf Veduten von Warschau, die für den polnischen König Stanislaus II. August Poniatowski entstanden. Ziel der Retrospektive ist es, den weltweit größten Bestand an Bellottos Gemälden in Dresden zu zeigen und verschiedene Schaffensphasen durch ausgewählte Leihgaben zu illustrieren. Neben Gemälden werden Druckgrafiken, Zeichnungen, Bücher und andere Objekte präsentiert, die das Œuvre des Künstlers kontextualisieren und einen eindrucksvollen Eindruck dieser glanzvollen Epoche vermitteln. Innerhalb der Wiener Kunstszene des ausgehenden 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhunderts wurde Claude Monet neben Édouard Manet als die zentrale Gestalt des französischen Impressionismus betrachtet. Seine Arbeiten waren in Ausstellungen im Künstlerhaus, in der Secession und in der legendären Galerie Miethke zu sehen und seinen Zeit genossen aus Zeitschriften oder Büchern bekannt. Der Einfluss Monets auf österreichische Maler und Fotografen, u. a. Gustav Klimt, Emil Jakob Schindler, Olga Wisinger-Florian, Heinrich Kühn oder Ludwig Heinrich Jungnickel, war unmittelbar und vielfältig, wie der Band anschaulich zeigt.

Carl Schuch ist einer der bedeutendsten österreichischen Maler des späten 19. Jahrhunderts. Von anderen Künstlern stets hochgeschätzt, erreichte er jedoch nie die Berühmtheit mancher Zeitgenossen. Das hat wesentlich damit zu tun, dass Schuch wohlhabend war und daher nicht auf den Markt drängte. Als Perfektionist setzte er immer wieder von Neuem dazu an, mit einem letztgültigen Meisterwerk die Öffentlichkeit für sich einzunehmen, war mit dem Erreichten jedoch nie zufrieden. Schuch, der sowohl die alten Meister als auch seine Kollegen akribisch studierte und seine Beobachtungen mit Skizzen versehen in seinen Tagebüchern festhielt, war ein gebildeter Kosmopolit, dessen ruheloses Leben ihn in viele Kunstzentren Europas führte. Dieser Katalog erläutert Carl Schuchs künstlerisches Vorgehen, sein malerisches Denken, seine Vorbilder sowie seine Selbstschulung anhand von Meisterwerken aus ganz Europa. Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt der Schau gilt Schuchs Stillleben. In ihnen erlangte er eine Meisterschaft, die ihn auf eine Stufe mit Edouard Manet und Paul Cézanne stellt und zugleich seine Herkunft aus der mitteleuropäischen Maltradition vor Augen führt.
