Die im vorliegenden Band präsentierten Aufsätze Robert Weimanns zu Shakespeare umspannen vier Jahrzehnte (1956-1995) und dokumentieren wichtige Positionen der DDR-Anglistik, darüber hinaus aber auch das Spannungsfeld, in dem sich Geisteswissenschaftler zu Zeiten des SED-Regimes bewegten, mit Überzeugungskraft, Anpassungsfähigkeit, List und Kompromissen ihre Freiräume erkämpfen mussten. Die Aufsätze dieser Sammlung werfen erhellendes Licht auf Methoden und Ergebnisse ostdeutscher Literaturwissenschaft, ihre Art der Historiographie, ihre Theoriediskurse und methodologischen Herangehensweisen an Literatur. Da sie über die Zeit der Wende bis in die Mitte der 90er-Jahre hineinreichen, dokumentieren sie aber auch, wie ein prominenter Literaturwissenschaftler der DDR den politischen Umbruch in seiner wissenschaftlichen Produktion bewältigt. Mittlerweile ist DDR-Wissenschaft als Bestandteil gesamtdeutscher Wissenschaftsgeschichte selbst in vielfältiger Weise Forschungsgegenstand geworden, und von daher mag dieser Band einen Beitrag leisten, der über das engere Fachgebiet der Anglistik hinausreicht.
