Wilhelm Heinrich Wackenroder

    July 13, 1773 – February 13, 1798

Wilhelm Heinrich Wackenroder was a foundational figure in German Romanticism, whose literary contributions profoundly shaped the movement. Collaborating closely with Ludwig Tieck, he championed a return to the emotional and spiritual depth found in Renaissance and medieval art and literature, contrasting it with the perceived intellectualism of the Enlightenment. His influential writings are credited with elevating Northern Renaissance art and establishing a new aesthetic sensibility. Wackenroder's work is recognized as a seminal text that ignited the Romantic spirit in Germany.
