Hans Kohn's life was lived amidst pivotal historical moments. Born in Prague in 1891, he came of age during the decline of the Habsburg Empire, experienced the turmoil of World War I, and endured five years as a prisoner of war in Russia. After extensive periods in London, Paris, and Jerusalem, he arrived in America in 1933. He then dedicated 27 years to teaching history at Smith College and the City College of New York, imbuing his academic career with the profound insights of someone who had witnessed history unfold firsthand.
