Der Däne Vilhelm Ludvig Peter Thomsen (1842-1927) gehört zu den bedeutendsten Forschern auf dem Gebiet der allgemeinen und vergleichenden Sprachwissenschaften. Seine in Kopenhagen erschienene Schrift gehört zu den «Klassikern» der «Historiographia Linguistiva». Vor der in den Jahren 1938 und 1945 in Moskau bzw. Barcelona/Madrid veröffentlichten russischen und spanischen Übersetzungen erschien im Jahre 1927 zum ersten Male die deutsche Fassung des Werkes. Die vorliegende deutsche Übersetzung schliesst sich möglichst wörtlich an den dänischen Text an. Das aus einer akademischen Vorlesung entstandene dänische Original wurde zuerst im Jahre 1902 als Einladungsschrift der Universität Kopenhagen zur Jahresfeier am Geburtstag des Königs veröffentlicht und dann 1919 in den ersten Band von Thomsens «Samlede afhandlinger» aufgenommen.
