Julius Wellhausen

    May 17, 1844 – January 7, 1918

This German biblical scholar and orientalist is noted particularly for his contribution to scholarly understanding of the origin of the Pentateuch/Torah. He is credited as one of the originators of the documentary hypothesis, which examines the literary composition of the first five books of the Bible. His work, notably Prolegomena to the History of Israel, sought to place the development of these texts within a historical and social context. This hypothesis remained the dominant model among biblical scholars until late in the 20th century.
