After celebrating its twentieth anniversary with three blockbuster exhibitions in 2017, the Fondation Beyeler and is starting the year 2018 with Georg Baselitz—without a doubt one of the most influential painters and sculptors of our time—is celebrating his eightieth birthday, and the Foundation is devoting an extensive retrospective to this provocateur. Many of Baselitz’s most important paintings and sculptures from the past six decades will be seen together for the first time. By displaying key works together, on an equal footing, it becomes easier to perceive the unique wealth of his formal and contextual innovations. Leafing through more than two hundred richly illustrated pages, the reader encounters the beautiful, the ugly, the ambiguous, and the disturbing.

douard Vuillard's fascinating paintings of the Louvre for a villa in Basel. In 1921 and 1922, soon after the end of World War I and the reopening of the Louvre, douard Vuillard created a cycle of six paintings for the entrance hall of the Villa Bauer in Basel, Switzerland. Four of these large-format pictures show exhibition rooms in the Louvre from antiquity to French rococo painting and two overdoors provide an intimate insight into the artist's collection. The cycle of paintings is of outstanding quality in both content and form, but it has seldom been examined and exhibited to date. Vuillard's Louvre pictures are a humanist manifesto for the social importance and responsibility of museums as places that preserve the evidence of human creativity for future generations.

Venedig entwickelte sich im 19. Jahrhundert zu einem magischen 'Laboratorium der Wahrnehmung', geprägt von einem einzigartigen Zusammenspiel von Licht, Wasser und Atmosphäre. Claude Monet, der sich 1908 in der Lagunenstadt aufhielt, ließ sich zu seinem berühmten Venedig-Zyklus inspirieren. Im Mittelpunkt steht Monets Venedig-Zyklus, ergänzt durch Meisterwerke von Künstlern wie Canaletto, J. M. William Turner und Paul Signac. Die vorgestellten Künstler umfassen unter anderem Francesco Guardi, James McNeill Whistler, John Singer Sargent, Anders Zorn, Edouard Manet und Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Eine begleitende Ausstellung fand in der Fondation Beyeler, Riehen/Basel, vom 28.9.2008 bis 25.1.2009 statt. Erhältlich ist auch die Reihe Kunst zum Lesen, die Briefe von Alice und Claude Monet aus Venedig umfasst.
