Max von Oppenheim Book order
July 15, 1860 – November 15, 1946
Max Freiherr von Oppenheim was a German archaeologist who, early in his career, abandoned diplomacy to finance his own Near Eastern excavations. His research at Tell Halaf yielded significant discoveries. Oppenheim sought to have his finds acquired by state museums, but after unsuccessful negotiations, he established his own museum. Tragically, much of his collection was destroyed during World War II.
