V tomto románě vyhání postupující civilizace starého lovce z lesů a nutí ho uchýlit se na volnou prérii. I sem však pronikají o zvuky civilizace, i sem přicházejí lidé hamižní, ale také dobří a šlechetní, především jeho přátelé z indiánských kmenů, kterým, stoje na straně práva, vždy pomáhal. V jejich středu dožívá pak i poslední chvíle svého života.
