William Smellie

    William Smellie was a Scottish obstetrician and medical instructor who practiced and taught primarily in London. As one of the first prominent male midwives in Britain, he designed an improved version of the obstetrical forceps and established safer delivery practices. Through his teaching and writing, he helped make obstetrics more scientifically based. His work significantly advanced the field of British midwifery.
