The chief theorist of Art Brut and what has come to be known as Outsider art, Jean Dubuffet (1901-1985) created a genre and a moniker for a whole realm of previously ignored art--by the insane and the mentally ill, by children and by those simply too compulsive to move smoothly through the official channels of the art world. Dubuffet arrived at his conception of a "raw art" in 1942, after passing through and sloughing off Surrealism and other early twentieth-century avant gardes, and after a spell as a wine seller and puppet maker. By 1945 he was collecting examples of Art Brut, and had begun to write polemical essays attacking the cultural logic of post-Renaissance western art, instead advocating the potencies of a visceral primitivism. This beautifully designed clothbound edition of Dubuffet's influential writings gathers the artist's essays and interweaves them with reproductions of his late maquettes for his monumental walk-in pieces.

Born in Liverpool in 1949, Tony Cragg is one of a group of young British sculptors who came to the fore in the early 1980s and went on to achieve significant international acclaim. This book includes sculptures, drawings, and graphic works by Cragg. He is constantly weaving new ideas into his work, a creative urge that is closely linked to his use of a wide variety of materials. His explorations in new materials continue -- most recently, a body of work in carbon fiber/Teflar. An anthology of quotations from Cragg's own writings and others elucidate the relationships between concept, form, and material in his work. Tony Cragg lives and works in Wuppertal, Germany.

Der Künstlerverein Malkasten feierte im Jahr 2023 sein 175-jähriges Bestehen. Tony Cragg is one of the most significant and boldest sculptors of the present day. His work is characterised by a surprising and immense richness of formal inventions that also manifests itself in his drawings since the 1980s ndash; perceptional metamorphoses of the objective world, of landscape and the figure. His first Early Forms were produced in the 1980s. They were developed from a skin that pushes in dramatically, twist dynamically and ambiguously recalls early forms of development. They are sculptures of amazing suppleness ndash; also in the group of works that revolve around the human face and its transformations. In doing so, the concepts of material and energy are given particular importance. In more than 120 drawings as well as the most significant sculptures produced since 2000, this catalogue shows which references between micro and macro structures are central for Cragg's artistic thought and what fascinates the artist about draughtsmanship ndash; the visualisation of the invisible, of waves, particles, rays, and currents in space between the bodies. This catalogue contains a comprehensive overview of Cragg's drawings and his most important sculptures of the past eight years. Die von ihm und Dr. Roland Mönig (Direktor des Von der Heydt-Museums) kuratierte Schau versammelt Darstellungen der menschlichen Figur, die zwischen der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts und den 1980er Jahren geschaffen wurden. Im Vergleich der unterschiedlichen Auffassungen des Motivs zeigt die Ausstellung, wie die Künstler und Künstlerinnen zwischen Klassizismus und Spätmoderne in der Auseinandersetzung mit der Tradition um eine neue, zeitgemäße Formensprache gerungen haben. Herausragende Beispiele dieser Entwicklung sind die hier präsentierten Arbeiten von Auguste Rodin, Edgar Degas, Hans Arp, Alberto Giacometti, Germaine Richier, Renée Sintenis und Käthe Kollwitz. Der ausstellungsbegleitende Katalog enthält neben einem umfangreichen Bildteil auch einen Essay der Kunsthistorikerin Dr. Ursula Ströbele sowie ein Gespräch der Ausstellungsmacher Tony Cragg und Dr. Roland Mönig. Darin wird das Zustandekommen der ungewöhnlichen Kooperation zweier Museen sowie die jeweilige Perspektive auf den Sammlungsschatz des Von der Heydt Museums beleuchtet.

Tony Cragg zählt zu den innovativsten und wandlungsfähigsten Bildhauern der internationalen Gegenwartskunst. Weniger bekannt ist, dass er mit Beginn seiner künstlerischen Tätigkeit in den 1970er-Jahren ein umfangreiches zeichnerisches Werk geschaffen hat, in dem er »Skulptur denkt«. Der über Jahrzehnte gewachsene zeichnerische Werkblock, der vielfach mit ungewöhnlichen Motiven überrascht, ist für ihn eine Inspirationsquelle erster Ordnung und erlaubt es uns, einen tiefen Einblick in sein bildhauerisches Denken zu gewinnen.
