1986 Jahre nach Christus und 14 davor, das ergibt 2.000 Jahre „Confluentes“ oder Koblenz, wie wir es nennen und kennen. Nach den Römern kamen die Franken, dann gehörte Koblenz beinahe 777 Jahre lang zum Erzstift Trier. Daß die Stadt 20 Jahre lang Hauptstadt eines französischen Departements war, mutet heute seltsam an. Ab 1815 preußisch, bis sie bei der Bildung des Bundeslandes Rheinland-Pfalz dessen Hauptstadt wurde. Diese Rolle mußte Koblenz 1950 an Mainz abtreten. Davor aber stand 1944 die große Zerstörung. Sie ist für den unbefangenen Bewohner und Besucher vor allem erkennbar an dem neuzeitlichen Inneren der Baudenkmäler, von denen viele wieder das Bild der Stadt bestimmen. Mit fast 113.000 Einwohnern, zu denen 11.000 Soldaten hinzukommen, ist Koblenz heute eine kleine stimmungsvolle Großstadt, begnadet gelegen am Zusammenfluß von Rhein und Mosel, wenig belastet von Industrie, dafür mehr den Dienstleistungen, dem Tertiären Sektor der Wirtschaft, zugetan.
