Pierre Gassendi

    January 22, 1592 – October 24, 1655

    Pierre Gassendi was a French philosopher who sought a way between skepticism and dogmatism. He was among the first thinkers to formulate the modern scientific outlook, characterized by moderated skepticism and empiricism. His most notable intellectual project attempted to reconcile Epicurean atomism with Christianity, offering a unique approach to philosophical thought of his era. A leader of free-thinking intellectuals in Paris, Gassendi's scientific pursuits also made contributions to astronomy.
