London, 1893, there is poisoner loose in the city, with deaths piling up, and private enquiry agents Cyrus Barker and Thomas Llewelyn are apparently his latest target in Fierce Poison, the next installment in Will Thomas's acclaimed historical mystery series. Private Enquiry agent Cyrus Barker has just about seen it all—he's been attacked by assassins, his office has been bombed, and evil-doers have even nearly killed his dog. But never before has a potential client dropped dead in his office. When Roland Fitzhugh, Member of Parliament arrives to consult Barker and his partner Thomas Llewelyn, he falls to the floor, dead, upon entering. As they soon learn, he's been poisoned with a cyanide laced raspberry tart, and the adulterated tarts also take out an entire family in the East End. Labelled the Mad Pie Man by the press, Barker and Llewelyn are hired by former Prime Minister William Gladstone to find out who has targeted the House of Commons's newest member. But before they can even begin, they find themselves the latest target of this mad poisoner—with Barker's butler poisoned with digitalis and dozens of diabolic traps discovered at their home. On the run from their unseen adversary, Barker and Llewelyn must uncover the threads that connect these seemingly random acts and stop the killer before they and their closest friends and family become the next casualties.

London, 1893 - deadly doings are afoot in the British Museum and private enquiry agents Cyrus Barker and Thomas Llewelyn must unravel a mystery involving a mummy, a giant ruby and a murder, in Will Thomas's Heart of the Nile. Cyrus Barker, along with his former assistant and now partner Thomas Llewelyn, is the premier enquiry agent in all of 19th century London, and beyond. They've thwarted the designs of villains and crooks off all sorts, helped Scotland Yard crack their most challenging cases, and worked for the Her Majesty's Government at the very highest levels. But nothing has been quite as challenging and dangerous as the latest case that comes to find them. In 1893, a volunteer at the British Museum makes a startling discovery. When examining a mummy in the museum's collection, he discovers there is a giant ruby in the shape of a heart buried in the chest of the mummy. Even more startling, the mummy might well be Cleopatra. The following morning, the volunteer is found floating in the Thames and the ruby has gone missing. Hired by the victim’s wife to learn the truth behind his death, Barker and Llewelyn find themselves in the crosshairs - now they must avoid a violent street gang, a ruthless collector, and the British Museum itself in order to find the killer and safeguard the gem.

Due to the globalization of supply chains, container logistics has been one of the emerging industry areas over the past years. The resulting growth of container handling volume causes the existing container terminals to meet their capacity limits and terminal operators to search for technologies for increasing the throughput of containers considering given terminal capacities. This work identifies RFID as an appropriate technology and provides an overview of its potential advantages in container logistics. The identified RFID-based information benefits are discussed with logistics experts and a subsequently accomplished two-stage Delphi study discovers that RFID in container logistics provides several benefits with varying degrees for each transport chain participant. Furthermore, the author analyzes all transshipment processes of a tri-modal transport chain and develops recommended actions in terms of accelerating and improving RFID-based process modifications. Subsequently, this work provides the results of a case study which measures the possible reduction of transshipment process times and discusses optimizations due to reduced labor requirements. Since the implementation of process modifications in a real-world container terminal is a difficult and costly venture, the author develops a physical miniature demonstrator to map the above presented improvements and illustrates the integration of RFID in maritime container logistics to give an understanding of this technology and its applicability to logistics practitioners. In summary, this work is an excellent contribution to the area of information technology and logistics. The book addresses researchers and students in the areas of business administration and computer science. In addition, managers and process owners in the fields of logistics and information technology can find valuable insights to make their businesses more efficient.

In the latest adventure in what is "fast becoming one of the genre's best historical-mystery series" (Booklist), roughhewn private enquiry agent Cyrus Barker and his assistant Thomas Llewelyn must track down London's first serial killer. When Barker and Llewelyn are hired to find a girl from the upper classes who has gone missing in the East End, they assume her kidnapping is the work of white slavers. But when they discover five girls have been murdered in Bethnal Green, taunting letters begin to arrive in Craig's Court from a killer calling himself Mr. Miacca. Barker fears that Miacca might be part of the Hellfire Club, a group of powerful, hedonistic aristocrats performing Satanic rituals. He must track the fiend to his hideout, while Llewelyn confronts the man who put him in prison. Dodging muckrakers, navigating the murky Thames under cover of darkness, and infiltrating London's most powerful secret society, The Hellfire Conspiracy is another wild ride that "brings to life a London roiling with secret leagues, deadly organizations, and hidden clubs" (Ron Bernas, Detroit Free Press).

In recent years man-machine-communication has become more important. Several speech dialogue systems have been developed in order to provide a very comfortable interaction for categorising users prior to forwarding them to a human employee. The aim is to satisfy the user without or at least with reduced human involvement. Hencethe goal of this book is to demonstrate how to create a dynamic speech dialogue with VoiceXML agents. This also includes calculating the shortest question sequencebased on user's given answers during the dialoguein order to complete the dialogue as quickly as possible. The book further contains an evaluation of available dialogue initiatives and question selection strategies. Furthermorea detailed design for a dynamic dialoguefrequent speech dialogue and speech recognition specific problemsas well as gained experiences are discussed. This volume is for ambitious innovators in charge of designing dynamic speech dialogues. Additionallythis book offers valuable insights to lecturers and students as well as to researchers in the area of speech dialogues and speech recognition.
