Toto je poslední příběh tří mušketýrů a jejich věrného přítele d'Artagnana. Z Aramise se stal představený jezuitského řádu, je vlivný člověk a toho se také pokusí využít. Ví o tajemství královské rodiny. Současný král Ludvík má bratra Filipa, dvojče, který byl zavřen do Bastily, aby se nikdo nedozvěděl, že existuje. Aramis ho dostane ven a pokusí se ho dosadit na francouzský trůn, ale vše je prozrazeno. Filip je opět zavřen a Aramis společně s Athosem, který je ve všem nevinně, na útěku. V této knize se uzavírají osudy a životy jejich hrdinů. Porthos umírá jako první, když je při útěku zavalen skálou. Další na řadě je Athos, ten nevydrží stesk po svém synovi Roulovi, který zemřel na nešťastnou lásku ke slečně de La Valiére. D'Artagnan pak umírá o pár let později v bitvě. Poslední ze čtyřlístku, a také jediný, kdo přežije, je Aramis, který se po zdařilém útěku po čtyřech letech vrací do Francie.

Tento román zachycuje život francouzského lidu v 1. třetině 19. století. Ústřední postavou je Jean Valjean. Je to bývalý galejník, který se na galeje dostal za krádež chleba. Když se mu podařilo uprchnout, okradl starého kněze, který mu nabídl nocleh. Když ho ale chytli četníci, kněz jimřekl, že stříbrné příbory Jeanu Valjeanovi dal darem, přidal mu ještě stříbrné svícny a tím ho zachránil od galejí. Tím Jeana ovlivnil a ten se poté stal dobrodincem a ochráncem těch nejbídnějších. Jeho protihráčem je policejní prefekt Javert, který ho pronásleduje. Zastává názor, že galejník zůstane galejníkem, a považuje dopadení Valjeana za své životní poslání. Ženskými hrdinkami románu jsou Fantine, mladá žena, kterou bída dohnala k prostituci a její dcera Cosette, které se ujal Jean Valjean a vychovává ji. Román vyznívá jako obžaloba tehdejší společnosti a mravů.

Děj dobrodružného románu se odehrává v polovině 19. století v povodí Mississippi, jehož okolí terorizuje banda pirátů. Popisuje dramatický boj dobrovolníků proti pirátům i proti divoké přírodě.

V roce 1907 vydal u nakladatele Vilímka sbírku pěti povídek Podivuhodné Jiříčkovo cestování. Vypráví o příhodách malého chlapce Jiříčka a jeho strýce, kteří prožijí mnoho příhod s pomocí strýcových vynálezů, ať již jde o skládací letadlo, stroj času či o zmenšovací přístroj, umožňující dramatickou plavbu ponorkou v kapce vody. Každá z povídek však končí Jiříčkovým probuzením. Druhé vydání této sbírky z roku 1925 je rozšířeno o další čtyři povídky.
