Zwischen 2013 und 2019 verfolgten die in Wien und Vancouver lebenden Künstler*innen Sabine Bitter und Helmut Weber gemeinsam mit dem Frankfurter Stadtsoziologen Klaus Ronneberger die Standortverlagerung der Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität Frankfurt vom Stadtteil Bockenheim in das Westend. Ihre künstlerische Recherche verschränkt die soziologische Analyse des Standortwechsels mit fotografischen Rückblicken insbesondere auf die Campusarchitekturen des deutschen Architekten Ferdinand Kramer aus den 1950er und 1960er Jahren. Eine umfangreiche Zusammenstellung von Bildern erinnert an die emanzipatorischen Potenziale dieser in Bockenheim verloren gegangenen Architekturen und "Räume des Wissens" der Universität. Gerade jetzt angesichts ihrer Entzauberung durch die neoliberale unternehmerische Wende ? fordern Bilder und Beiträge erneut ein Verständnis von Universität, das die einstigen Versprechen der Bildungsmoderne auf Emanzipation, Demokratisierung und "Bildung für alle" einlösen kann. An exciting exhibition catalog of recent work by the dynamic duo of Sabine Bitter and Helmut Weber, artists based in Vancouver and Vienna, who, since 1993, have collaborated on projects addressing urban geographies, architectural representations and related visual politics. This book, the most extensive publication so far for these artists dedicated to urban culture and theory, includes photos, collages, drawings and installations from cities such as Belgrade, Vancouver, Paris, Bucharest and Caracas. They authored the recently released ''urban re-thinking'' manual by Sternberg and FILLIP, Autogestion, or Henri Lefebvre in New Belgrade. Their photo and video works engage with specific moments and cultural logics of (neo-liberal) globalization, as they are materialized in architecture as a frame for spatial meaning.

This moment reflects a serious interest in America's global actions, often described as a cause for 'grave concern.' While we do not aim to definitively address these concerns, we believe that exploring discourse surrounding a nation's visual artists reveals insights into its politics and society that are otherwise unattainable. This compilation offers a glimpse into contemporary life in the United States, fostering inspired debate. We hope it serves as a valuable resource for recent writings on contemporary art and inspires further exploration of these 'Uncertain States.' Der Name ist Programm: Chimæra als (mythisches) Ganzes, verschmolzen aus Lebewesen verschiedensten Ursprungs. Angesehene Fachleute aus der Slowakei, Polen, Ungarn, Tschechien, Österreich und Deutschland standen vor der Aufgabe, repräsentative Arbeiten aus ihrem Land für die gleichnamige Ausstellung in Halle und Bratislava auszuwählen. Dabei entstand eine Sammlung, der es gelingt, verschiedene künstlerische Richtungen vor dem Hintergrund eines zusammenwachsenden Europas der Jahrtausendwende zueinander in Beziehung zu setzen.
