The adventures described in this book represent the realisation of a dream that in the author's boyhood (in a respectable but materially impoverished working class area of northern England) seemed unthinkable. His first safari, in Kenya in 1962 (as a young sailor in the Royal Navy) was certainly low- budget (GBP12 for 2 days!).
