Tous trois étaient alors déjà des pionniers dans leur discipline respective: histoire de la littérature médiévale, histoire de l'art au Moyen Age, littérature comparée. Ces lettres permettent de replacer les trois amis dans leur milieu familial, de mieux connaître leurs goûts littéraires et artistiques, de les accompagner dans leurs voyages, de les voir hésiter devant le choix d'un sujet de thèse, de suivre l'élaboration de leur premier livre, d'assister à leur soutenance et de voir commencer des carrières exceptionnelles sous l'oeil vigilant du directeur de l'Ecole Normale Supérieure.
