On the occasion of Neo Rauch’s sixtieth birthday, the art historian Ralph Keuning conducts an interview with the artist. They talk about the new paintings from 2020 and dive into the visual cosmos. We discover new aspects about Neo Rauch’s personality, his dialogue with the figures on the canvas, the efforts of creating his works, as well as the search for balance and stability in painting and life. Neo Rauch (born 1960) is one of the most important figurative painters of his generation and a pioneer of the so-called new Leipzig school of painting. <i>Gespenster </i>(Ghosts) is published for Rauch's most recent solo exhibition of the same name at Galerie Eigen+Art Leipzig, in 2013. The catalogue contains the first reproductions of the 20 new paintings that were shown in the exhibition, as well as detailed views of the canvases and installation shots. Rauch's new paintings portray brooding phantasmagoric scenarios composed of several different snapshots that spatially (and sometimes narratively) overlay each other. A rusty, red-brown undertone suffuses the pictures, its muteness emphasized against intensely chromatic areas. Unlike the large-scale paintings, Rauch's smaller works are softer and more graphic, with isolated figures and deserted landscapes, like fragments from completed pictures that have become independent.

In seinen Bildern schafft Neo Rauch jene einzigartige Atmosphäre, die eine Mischung aus Realem, Erzähltem und Erträumtem ist. Voller Aktivität, doch auf geheimnisvolle Weise emotional statisch erscheinen diese Gemälde, die den Betrachter in Szenen mit archetypischen Wesen und surrealen Landschaften versetzen. Viele seiner Arbeiten sind bevölkert von Figuren, die räumlich miteinander verbunden sind, doch entfremdet bleiben und in Unwissenheit voneinander verharren. Obwohl bekannte Elemente in Rauchs Gemälden erscheinen, sind die gewählten Situationen dieser Parallel-Welt bizarr, und das scheinbar Normale vermischt sich mit dem Absurden und Paradoxen. So entstand der von Neo Rauch gewählte Titel: para. Dieser Band präsentiert neue, eigens für die Ausstellung im New Yorker Metropolitan Museum entstandene Arbeiten von Neo Rauch. Texte von Gary Tinterow, Kurator am Metropolitan Museum, und von Werner Spies werden ergänzt durch eine Textcollage zur Rezeption der Malerei Neo Rauchs sowie einen Werküberblick der vergangenen 10 Jahre. Dieser Band zeichnet Rauchs bildnerische Arbeit im Bereich des 'para', seine Bilder parallel und jenseits der Wirklichkeit, auf.
