The exocrine pancreas synthesizes and secretes more than ten enzymes and proenzymes. Impairment or loss of pancreatic functions results in either partial or complete loss of compensation for most nutrients, although a healthy gland secretes ten times the necessary amount of enzymes. Thus, as a rule, exocrine pancreatic insufficiency manifests itself at a late stage; nevertheless, it can develop into a clinically significant problem, but one which is difficult to diagnose and treat. This compendium presents a summary of the latest, state-of-the-art knowledge available concerning the diagnosis and therapy of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency competently and with a view to practical applications. The result is a well-balanced and practice-oriented reference book which reflects the current state of knowledge on this subject.

Pancreatic carcinoma is a relatively rare disease, compared to colorectal or breast carcinoma. Therefore, several centers have specialized on this devasting disease. Whilst the biology of the tumor is well investigated, there is hardly any other area of medicine leaving such a disturbing discrepancy between resources spent on research and benefit to the patient. Pancreatic carcinoma represents a neverending challenge to all physicians and disciplines involved covering all aspects of disease: prevention, early diagnostics as well as surgical, endoscopical, medical, radiation and supportive therapy. For long, a comprehensive book solely covering all aspects of pancreatic carcinoma and involving specialists from all disciplines was lacking. This gap is closed by this book, covering epidemiology, molecular and cell biology, pathology, diagnostics and therapy addressing colleagues working in any of the specialities involved, e. g. medicine, gastroenterology, surgery or pathology.
