Es gibt sciher nur wenige Esssays zur Geschicht, die man mit so viel Vergnügen liest wie die von Frans G. Bengtsson, dessen pittoreske Gestalten man schon in seinem Wikingerroman "Röde Orm" bewundert hat. Dabei geht es hier meist um Intrigen und Machtkämpfe, um Meuchelmord und Schlachtengetümmel. Aber auch Mut, Treue und Todesverachtung finden sich, allerdings meist nur bei den "kleinen" Leuten - bei Alexanders mazedonischer Schildwache, bei dem Fußvolk der Wikinger oder bei Napoleons Gardisten in Rußland.

Zpráva o pokladu v hlubinách Dněpru způsobí, že hrdina zapomene na svá předsevzetí a ještě jednou v životě se vydává na dobrodružnou plavbu.
