In this edited volume, an international team of authors examines the development of football during the Second World War in a dozen European states. The volume concludes with essays on the representation of the topic in the arts and the media.

Unter der NS-Diktatur waren den Sportvereinen dezidiert politische Aufgaben zugedacht, gleichwohl stand das freiheitliche bürgerliche Vereinswesen im Gegensatz zu den Herrschaftsstrukturen des Regimes. Die NS-Politik verfolgte eine ebenso umfassende wie radikale „Gleichschaltung“ des Sports, musste die totale Umsetzung dieses Plans aus taktischen Gründen jedoch auf die Zeit nach dem „Endsieg“ vertagen. Viele Details der Gleichschaltungsprozesse im Fußballsport unter der NS-Diktatur sind weitgehend unbekannt. Der Band schließt anhand neuer Archivrecherchen einige dieser Lücken und zeigt ferner Kontinuitäten zwischen den beiden deutschen Diktaturen auf. Der Fokus soll dabei nicht nur auf den Anspruch des Regimes gelegt werden, den Sport der Partei zu unterwerfen, sondern auch darauf, inwieweit er in die Tat umgesetzt wurde.

As the Second World War began on 1st September 1939, the environment for sport also changed, in part, dramatically. Official propaganda no longer considered football to be just a mere game, but as an instrument of political and military intentions. However, due to its unpredictability, football was only suited for this to a limited extent. At the same time, this sport created politically-neutral spaces for exciting entertainment and escapist diversion. The focal points of the book are the situations in the European countries occupied by German troops, the Greater German Reich, in the Allied and neutral states and in the British sphere of influence, as well as the reception of the issue in the arts.
