Louis Antoine de Bougainville

    November 11, 1729 – August 31, 1811

    Louis Antoine de Bougainville was a French soldier and explorer whose early career included service as an aide-de-camp in Canada during the Seven Years' War. He was instrumental in establishing the first settlement on the Falkland Islands for expelled Acadians. Bougainville later led the first French circumnavigation, chronicling his journey in 'Voyage autour du monde.' His military contributions extended to the American War of Independence, where he commanded ships in several key battles, notably contributing to the French victory at the Battle of the Chesapeake.
