More about the book

The House of Artists in Gugging, Austria, was born out of the idea that art produced by persons on the funges of society, such as the mentally handicapped, the mentally ill, and prisoners, could have as much validity and importance as works produced by established, recognized artists. This movement, known as "Art Brut," was one of the major innovations in 20th century art. This volume presents the work of many of the residents of The House of Artists, one of the earliest sources of "Art Brut" and discusses how art helped the artists and gave many of them a new life.
