Central and Eastern Europe and the World in the 20th Century

Continuities and Discontinuities

More about the book

This scientific collective monograph is based on contributions from an international conference held in September 2021 at the University of Pécs, Hungary, in collaboration with the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, Czech Republic. It explores the themes of continuity and discontinuity in the 20th century. Chapters authored by experts from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Germany, and Slovakia examine these issues not only within the context of Central and Eastern European history but also in relation to non-European areas. Key historical events discussed include the Great War, the Versailles-Washington System, the era of dictators, the Second World War, and the bipolarity of the world, culminating in the Cold War. This period, marked by the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet Union, is characterized as an age of extremes, as well as an epoch defined by significant continuity and discontinuity, extending beyond just the European dimension. The work aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of these complex historical phenomena, reflecting on their implications for both regional and global contexts.
