More about the book

Europe's fascination with the art and culture of ancient Egypt has a long tradition. During Roman times, obelisks, statues, and reliefs from pharaonic tombs and temples were transported across the Mediterranean. With the rediscovery of Egypt in modern times, early excavations by Egyptologists, and the rise of Egyptomania in the 19th century, many treasures found their way into European museums and private collections. Today, the Egyptian Museum in Cairo holds the largest collection of ancient Egyptian art in the world. Significant works from this era are also housed in the Louvre in Paris, the British Museum in London, the Egyptian Museum in Berlin, and the Metropolitan Museum in New York. This volume presents notable artifacts including a statue of Djoser, a wooden relief of the high official Hesi-Re, a relief from the sarcophagus of Queen Ashait, the Sphinx of Sesostris III, a statue of Cherihotep, reliefs from the Karnak temple, the sarcophagus of Queen Hatshepsut, wall paintings from Thebes, a statue of the goddess Sekhmet, a statue of Queen Tiye, busts of Akhenaten and Nefertiti, as well as the golden death mask of Tutankhamun and many other precious artifacts.
