More about the book

Based on a true story, this gripping historical novel follows a German immigrant caught in a Nazi spy ring in New York City during the early days of World War II. In the late 1930s, while Europe is engulfed in war, New York becomes a battleground of its own, with anti-Semitic and racist groups spreading hate, and German nationalists celebrating Hitler. Josef Klein, a German immigrant, initially remains untouched by the turmoil around him, finding solace in the vibrant, multicultural neighborhood of Harlem, filled with families and friends enjoying life. His passion for radio leads him to a job as a shortwave operator, but he soon realizes he is part of a Nazi espionage network. When American authorities discover his involvement, he is detained at Ellis Island and later deported to Germany. Back home, he encounters his brother Carl's soap merchant family and witnesses the seductive power of the Nazis and the war's devastating effects. Ultimately, Josef seeks a fresh start in South America as José, but he grapples with the inescapable truth: no matter how far he runs, his past will always catch up with him.
