On the island of Java, in Laboewangi, a series of inexplicable events occur, attributed by the locals to "the hidden force," a mysterious presence that captivates the people. The resident, Otto van Oudijck, dismisses this notion as nonsense. However, after he dismisses a regent for inappropriate behavior at a party, strange occurrences begin to unfold in his home. His wife, who is unfaithful to him, inexplicably finds herself splattered with blood in the bathroom, a mirror is shattered by a large stone, glass breaks spontaneously, and hammering sounds echo throughout the house. Most characters flee, leaving Van Oudijck alone. As he begins to feel weaker and falls ill, he gradually starts to believe in the hidden force, confronting the very mystery he once scorned.
