Burmese folk-tales

Book rating

More about the book

The heroes of Burmese folk tales include the wise and just rabbit, the crocodile Rain Cloud, and the water dragons known as nagas, who can take on human forms but can also incinerate living beings with a mere glance. Alongside kings, princes, and princesses, these tales feature benevolent spirits, mischievous and man-eating giants, cunning tricksters, palm wine drinkers, and opium smokers. Many stories evoke laughter, while others impart moral lessons, exemplified by the Buddhist Jataka tales that became part of Burmese folklore with the widespread acceptance of Buddhism around a thousand years ago.
