Prof. Dr. Max Kunze war von 1969 bis 1982 Direktor des Winckelmann-Museums in Stendal, von 1978 bis 1990 Geschäftsführendes Vorstandsmitglied der Winckelmann-Gesellschaft. Von 1982 bis 1993 war er Direktor der Ostberliner Antikensammlung der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin. Seit 1990 ist er Präsident der Winckelmann-Gesellschaft. Zugleich leitet er die Arbeitsstelle für die historisch-kritische Herausgabe der Schriften Winckelmanns an der Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Literatur in Mainz.
