More about the book

Katherine Mansfield's first published collection of stories and sketches is very different in tone from her later work. There is a gay, boisterous, malicious quality about these impatient tilts at the German way of life in a Bavarian watering-place. However unworthy the author later found these sketches, such characters as the Frau Oberregierungsrat or the greedy Herr Rat or the snobbish Frau Doktor, have worn well and today enlist the reader's sympathy and laughter as often as does the rather prim narrator.
