More about the book
The Shōbōgenzō is the major work of the Japanese Zen master Eihei Dōgen. It is considered one of the great works of religious and philosophical literature, not only of Japan but of all time. The work, originally written in medieval Japanese, was composed over twenty-three years. It constitutes an excellent summary of the Chan Buddhist culture of China that Dōgen encountered during his pilgrimage through the Chinese monasteries of the Song dynasty, presented with the sensitivity and idiosyncrasy of a cultivated Japanese spirit.
