Raised by his Cameronian grandparents, S. R. Crockett's early life on a tenanted farm influenced his literary work, particularly in creating the fictional Cairn Edward. After winning a bursary to Edinburgh University, he started a journalistic career while studying for the ministry. Crockett became a minister in 1886 and married Ruth Mary Milner the following year. His experiences traveling across Europe and his deep roots in Scottish culture shaped his writing, making him a notable figure in Scottish literature.
