More about the book
The Old Testament depicts the world uncompromisingly as it is. Its pages contain passionate stories of love and hatred, horrifying tales of rape and dismemberment, stark accounts of the slave trade, true narratives of wartime heroism, and brutal betrayal. Nothing is clean and orderly here. Spoiled brats like Solomon and Samson receive supernatural gifts, while a truly good man like Job faces catastrophe. There is nothing comfortable about the Bible—unless we manage to make it comfortable for ourselves. Have we stopped asking questions of the text, or has it stopped asking questions of us? Have we ceased to wrestle with it? If so, we likely no longer read it seriously.
