His experiences fueled his writing career, leading to over 100 published works and establishing him as a prominent adventure novelist of his time. Notably, his novel influenced Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island, showcasing his impact on the adventure genre. His artistic talent also saw him exhibiting watercolors at the Royal Scottish Academy.
