More about the book

In 1933, just before the rise of the National Socialists, Berlin is alive with demonstrations by the Red Front, who paint slogans on walls and distribute leaflets. Among them is aspiring writer Jan Petersen. As the Nazis take control of Berlin, the communist resistance persists, despite the constant threat of disappearance, torture, and murder of its members. The events depicted in this book are based on true occurrences; Jan Petersen documented them in 1933/34 and smuggled the manuscript abroad at great personal risk. "Unsere Strasse" was published in London in 1938 and later in German in 1947. It is regarded as a crucial work of the German resistance against the National Socialists, capturing the spirit of defiance and the harsh realities faced by those who opposed the regime.
