Southwestern Sojourn: A Photographer's Journal

More about the book

An epic photographic journey unfolds through Colorado and Utah, culminating in a ten-day canoe trip down the Green River, featuring over 100 photographs by the author. Parker and his companion, Jim Beasley, embark on this adventure in May, facing challenges and excitement along the way. The journey is meticulously documented, detailing everything from planning and preparation to shooting locations and backpacking menus. Before the canoe expedition, Parker explores Ancient Puebloan ruins in Mesa Verde, Hovenweep, and along the Trail of the Ancients, capturing the intricate masonry left by the Anasazi, stark desert landscapes, and towering natural bridges. Meeting Beasley in Moab, they load a 17' Grumman canoe with an array of gear, including 50 gallons of water, two camp chairs, and enough food for a small army, all while carrying cameras to document their experience. With an ambitious hiking and photography itinerary, they set out from Mineral Basin to photograph the Buttes of the Cross, first spotted by John Wesley Powell in 1869. Camping at Fort Bottom, Anderson Bottom, and Turks Head, they encounter more adventure than anticipated. Ten days later, they emerge from the river, weary yet wiser about nature's power.
