A dead woman lies in a party dress with a broken neck on the veranda steps. It appears to be an accident, but a good detective's eye notices details that suggest otherwise: a wedding ring on the floor, a broken glass, a clean ashtray, and cigar stubs in the trash. Commissaris de Gier and Adjudant Grijpstra suspect foul play and soon find themselves in danger.
