More about the book
"Litauische Claviere" is Bobrowski's second novel, completed shortly before his untimely death in 1965. Set in 1936 in the Memel region, the story follows high school teacher Voigt and concertmaster Gawehn as they attempt to write an opera about the Lithuanian national poet Kristijonas Donelaitis. Their research leads them into the violent turmoil surrounding the celebrations of national associations of Germans and Lithuanians. The narrative explores themes of cultural identity, nationalism, and the impact of historical events on personal lives, weaving a rich tapestry of the complexities of the time.
