Born in 1942 in England, he earned an M.A. in illustration from the Royal College of Art, London, in 1966. His career at Time Magazine spanned from 1978 to 1994, where he served as Executive Art Director, overseeing charts, covers, and graphics. His work has been featured in notable publications such as American Health, Esquire, Fortune, GQ, Harper's, The New Yorker, and the New York Times, among others. He has collaborated on projects for major organizations including AARP, Apple, CNN.com, GE Capital, Nike, and Sony. His accolades include Gold awards from the Society of Newspaper Designers, AIGA, and the Art Directors Club of New York, as well as various national magazine awards. He authored several influential books, including "Designer's Guide to Creating Charts and Diagrams" and "Pictorial Maps." Since 1980, he has taught at The Stanford Professional Publishing Course and, from 1983, at The Poynter Institute for Media Studies. He is also a sought-after lecturer, sharing his expertise both in the U.S. and internationally.
