This novel is based on the classic epic Chushingura (The Treasury of Loyal Retainers), one of Japan's most enduring and beloved stories. On March 14, 1701, Asano Takuminokami Naganori, the feudal lord of Banshu Ako domain (in present-day Hyogo Prefecture), drew his sword and lunged at Kira Kozukenosuke Yoshinaka, the shogunate's court-protocol expert, at Edo Castle.
