Ihren ersten großen Auftritt hatten Hermann & Valentiny Mitte der Achtzigerjahre mit einer Stadtvilla in der Rauchstraße im Rahmen der IBA Berlin, auf dem Höhepunkt der Postmoderne in Europa. Inzwischen baut das Büro-mit Standorten in Wien und Remerschen - nicht nur in Luxemburg und Österreich, sondern maßgeblich auch in Deutschland, und es hat sich inhaltlich wie formal entwickelt. Als Vertreter Luxemburgs bei der Architekturbiennale in Venedig haben Hermann & Valentiny unlängst demonstriert, wie Architektur und Kunst eine zeitgemäße Allianz eingehen. Hermann & Valentiny first came to public attention in the 1980s with their villa in Rauchstrasse, a part of the International Building Exhibition in Berlin, when postmodernism was at its peak in Europe. Since then the office which is based in Vienna and Remerschen has built in Austria, Luxembourg and Germany, and its architecture has progressed in both form and content. Representing Luxembourg at the architecture biennale in Venice, Hermann & Valentiny reveal how architecture and art can be successfully combined. Der aktuelle Werkbericht,,Jetzt | Now" macht anschaulich, dass konzeptuelle Fragen heute die Arbeit von Hermann & Valentiny dominieren, auch ein vergleichsweise strenger Umgang mit dem Material: Beton hat - wo immer möglich - den Putz ersetzt, Glas behauptet ohnehin einen eigenen Stellenwert, Streckmetall ist die Membran, die mitunter auch noch (Bau)Geschichte durchschimmern läßt. Außerdem: Farbe als eigenständige Position. Natürlich Schwarz und Weiß, es gibt da aber auch ein Tomatenrot, ein Melonengelb, ein Pfefferminzgrün... Und es gibt schließlich Gesamtkonzepte, in denen das „lebende", das natürliche Umfeld mitgedacht, mitgeplant wird. This up-to-date report "Jetzt | Now" illustrates how conceptual questions and a comparatively restricted choice of materials dominate the work of Hermann & Valentiny. Wherever possible they use concrete to replace plaster; glass maintains its unique role; metal mesh acts as a membrane, allowing historical architecture to shimmer through. Moreover, colour has a special function in their architecture. Not just black and white, but also tomato red, melon yellow, peppermint green... Finally, the book reveals the architects' general concepts which incorporate the living, the natural surroundings in the plans.
