Mladý venkovský šlechtic Hyacint Kavalír, budoucí Strážce Donžonu, žije v Antipoli dvojím životem: přes den jako student, v noci jako neohrožený hrdina jménem Košile noci. Mladíka finančně zajišťuje bohatý strýc. Hyacint mu je proto zavázán a nezbývá mu než vyhovět jeho požadavkům. Na strýcův nátlak se snaží přesvědčit profesora Fontaina, aby povolil stavbu metra v podzemí města. Vše ale končí vraždou profesora, ze které je Hyacint nespravedlivě obviněn. V masce Košile noci se pokouší očistit své jméno, bojovat za spravedlnost a v neposlední řadě získat srdce krásné, ale nedostupné Alexandry.
