Die Gegensätze der Machtblöcke treten in Bildern zutage, wie sie für Endo typisch sind: auf der einen Seite der jugendlich-unschuldig anmutende Held, auf der anderen Sequenzen einer bestialischen Brutalität, die – zumal oft an Schwächeren vollzogen – die ganze innere Zerrissenheit und das Gespaltensein einer Welt nach dem Untergang zeichnet. Diese Bilder bleiben nicht ohne Wirkung auf den Leser.
