Závěrečná část tzv. „německé trilogie“, v níž autor líčí svůj útěk na sklonku války z Francie přes poražené Německo do exilu v Dánsku. Skočná je z „německé trilogie“ snad nejdramatičtější: Céline, jeho žena Lili a kocour Bébert v ní projíždějí hroutícím se Německem a vyprávění je jen obrazem víru, v němž pud sebezáchovy slevuje i z nároků na důstojnost; lidé nejsou už osobnosti zápasící o zbytky svého postavení, nýbrž animální tvorové v ohrožení života. Jestliže předchozími díly trilogie probleskla tu a tam naděje na lidskou solidaritu a slušnost, tato poslední próza, kterou Céline dopsal den před svou smrtí, zpečetila jeho vidění člověka nejhlubším zklamáním.
