Zákony života, vesmíru a vůbec se surově postrkují Galaxií, tentokrát pro nic menšího, než je záchrana samotného vesmíru. Ano, je znovu čas sbalit ručník, porozhlédnout se po bezpečné skrýši, kam by člověk mohl odložit pud sebezáchovy, a vyrazit. Po tisíciletích ožívá nebezpečí, že poměrně mírumilovný národ se záviděníhodným citem pro melodii podlehne svému děsu z jiných vesmírných ras a na druhý pokus se s nimi vypořádá jednou provždy. V situacích, kdy i zdánlivě nekonečné večírky končí soumrakem bohů, se zdá, že naši hrdinové měli sotva kdy podstatnější důvody opakovaně si připomínat ono nevyčerpatelně povzbudivé Nepropadejte panice!

    Pátá a závěrečná část slavné trilogie, v níž Arthur Dent hledá tichou, nenápadnou planetu, kde by mohl v klidu strávit zbytek života. Jeho přání se splní – dostane se na poklidnou, mírumilovnou planetu, kde život plyne bez větších vzruchů a problémů. Její sympatičtí obyvatelé žijí na technické úrovni odpovídající zhruba pozemskému osmnáctému století, a tak se Arthur horlivě snaží přijít na to, které výdobytky své rodné civilizace by mohl novým spoluobčanům zprostředkovat. Odpověď je překvapivě jednoduchá. Idylický poklid však naruší mimořádná událost: ztroskotání kosmické lodi.

    It`s easy to become disheartened when your planet has been demolished for an unnecessary hyperspacial express route, the woman you love has vanished in a misunderstanding about the nature of space/time, the spaceship in which you are travelling crashed in flames on a remote and Bob-fearing planet, and all you have to fall back on are a few sandwich-making skills. However, instead of becoming disheartened, Arthur Dent makes the terrible mistake of starting to enjoy life a bit and immediately all hell breaks loose.
