Michel de Montaigne (1533-92) - francuski myśliciel, filozof, humanista, pisarz, polityk (był przez dwie kadencje burmistrzem Bordeaux), autor Prób (francuski tytuł: Essais - wyd 1580). Pisał to swoje dzieło życia w zasadzie dla przyjemności. Trudno w tym wypadku mówić o jakimś filozoficznym systemie. Zresztą absolutnie nie o ogólną teorię Montaigneowi chodziło lecz raczej o sztukę życia, o konkret i o z życia wzięty racjonalizm, połączony ze zdroworozsądkowym sceptycyzmem. Zajmował się faktami dotyczącymi życia człowieka, przy czym zycie było dla niego najwyższym dobrem - to nawiązanie do epikureizmu. Jak pisze W. Tatrkiewicz Właściwością poglądów Montaigne'a było: że oparte były na obserwacji i zdrowym rozsądku, nie na spekulacji pojęciowej, tradycji filozoficznej i metodach uczonych. Że zajmował się wyłącznie sprawami doczesnymi i ludzkimi (to był jego humanizm). Że zadania filozofii rozumiał nie teoretycznie, lecz praktycznie: chciał by była sztuką życia. Że założeniem jego było: przyjemnie żyć to jest jedyne dobro (to był jego epikureizm). Że nie należy zagłębiać się w niepewne i niewydajne spory teoretyczne (to był jego sceptycyzm). Że przyroda jest wzorem dla człowieka i jego sztuki życia (to był jego naturalizm). Że ostateczną miarą prawdy jest rozum (to był jego racjonalizm). Że różne prawdy i prawa są tylko rzeczą zwyczaju (to był jego relatywizm). Ta niezmierna pochwała życia, ta radość którą Próby emanują spowdowały, że już za życia autora miały kilka wydań, ale też i to że w nieco późniejszych czasach kontrreformacji trafiły na Indeks Ksiąg Zakazanych
