Guglielmo Scaramellini

With over four decades dedicated to the study, practice, and teaching of geography at the universities of Turin, Modena, and particularly Milan, Guglielmo Scaramellini delved into a wide array of the discipline's facets. His early work focused on physical geography, including research on glaciers and glacial morphology, reflecting his academic formation when physical and human geography were considered intrinsically linked. His interests later shifted to human geography, where he explored cities and metropolises, cultural and settlement economic systems, and the specificities of mountain societies, especially in the Alps. Furthermore, his scholarship examines travel accounts, highlighting their value for understanding the Earth and for comprehending the societies of the travelers themselves, who find a reflection of themselves in the 'other'.
